Review . . . plus "What do conjunctions connect?"
"Conjunction junction, what's your function? Hookin' up words, and clauses, and phrases."
When a conjunction connects two independent clauses, a comma is needed before the conjunction. (CC RULE)
What is an independent clause?
It is a part of a sentence that could stand alone as a complete sentence.
LAGNIAPPE Strangler Fig
Beginning life as a sticky seed left on a high tree branch by an animal such as a bird, bat, or monkey, the young strangler lives as an epiphyte on the tree’s surface.
(Definition) An epiphyte is an organism that grows on the surface of a plant and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, water or from debris accumulating around it.
As it grows, long roots develop and move down along the trunk of the host tree. The roots eventually reach the ground and enter the soil.
NO SUN
The host tree eventually becomes shaded by the thick fig foliage.
SHEATH CONSTRICTS
Several roots usually do this, and they become grafted together. Enclosing their host’s trunk in a strangling latticework, they ultimately create a nearly complete sheath around the trunk.
ROOTS COMPETE
The trunk of the tree becomes constricted by the surrounding root sheath. The tree's own root system forced to compete for nutrients with that of the strangling fig.
This process can kill the host.
In comparison to bad habits:
Like a mighty enemy, a bad or destructive habit can wrap around us and hold us prisoner.
But there is hope! When Isaiah talked about Israel's enemies, he stated, "When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will put him to flight."
If you let Him, God will help you defeat and destroy destructive habits.
Reach for God early and then sinful habits will never have the chance to strangle you.
The Key Word Outline helps maintain focus on the main idea of each sentence in a source text (or class lecture, or research).
Students can easily find out if they have focused on the main ideas when they attempt to re-write their sentences using only their key words.
If they haven’t, they will have a difficult time re-writing the sentence (and at that point, they should review the original text and reconsider their choice of key words).
Understanding and being able to articulate the main idea of a text is a critical skill all students need to become well-educated adults.
